[edit] Agenda

It is important to have clear goals that your group is working towards. Without this, your group can become unfocused, and members will quickly lose interest.

[edit] Media

Choose one member of your group to be the "media liaison". That is the only person that should talk to the media! If some other member is spoken to, they should direct the media person to the liaison. (If you have a very large or diffuse group, you may want to have more than one liaison.)

Your group, if it gains any popularity at all, will have an image associated with it in the public mind. The media liaison must be in charge of presenting that "face" to the public.

[edit] 5 Steps To Organizing

  1. Get in the door (get them to sit and talk with you)
  2. Get THEIR issues (find out what's important to them)
  3. Educate (about what the union is supposed to be in the workplace vs. the reality, esp. as it relates to THEIR issues)
  4. Innoculate (tell them any bad news upfront)
  5. Get a commitment (send the e-mail, go to the meeting, etc.)

If you can get to the second step, then you should be able to get all the info you need whether they commit to take action or not.  Remember, it's important to know why people who say no do that.

[edit] Other

  1. NEVER turn down money (unless it comes with strings attached that could compromise the integrity of the group).
  2. NEVER turn down volunteers. There's always something that needs to get done, in any organization. Keep a list of things to do around, in case somebody wants to help.
