- Download Scribus for your operating system and install it. Scribus is a desktop-publishing program, which means that it is designed for creating newsletters, magazines, and other types of print media. (A word processor may work just as well if your project is simple enough.) If you don't know how to use Scribus, find out if there is someone in your organization who is familiar with desktop publishing or Scribus, or you can train yourself with a tutorial, like this one. Moreover, Scribus is free software that runs on most modern operating systems, including GNU/Linux, MacOS, and Windows.
- Sketch the layout for your newsletter on some scratch paper. Calculate space for alleys (the space between columns), and gutters (the space between pages). Decide how you want everything to look: where logos, graphics, text, and headlines will go. Details can be worked out later.
- A quick-and-easy way to get started is to select File > Open from Template, and choose Newsletter 1. This gives you a 4-page newsletter layout that can be printed on one sheet of 17x11 paper. All you have to do is add your own content, and adjust the layout to taste! When you're done, go to File > Save As to save a copy. When you're ready to print, go to File > Export > Save as PDF.
